Who Are At the Gates? Gothenburg's Melodic Death Metal Pioneers

· The Band

At the Gates are one of the bands that gave Gothenburg its sound. Here is a short look at where they came from, the records that made them, and the singer fans are remembering.

How did At the Gates start?

The band formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1990, started by former members of the death and black metal band Grotesque. Singer Tomas Lindberg was among the founders, with Anders Björler on guitar, Jonas Björler on bass and Adrian Erlandsson on drums.

What came out first?

The Gardens of Grief EP arrived in 1991 and led Peaceville to sign the band. The debut album The Red in the Sky Is Ours followed in 1992, then With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness in 1993 and Terminal Spirit Disease in 1994.

Why does Slaughter of the Soul matter?

Slaughter of the Soul came out on Earache in November 1995, recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg with producer Fredrik Nordström. It opens with "Blinded by Fear", and "Cold" carries a guest solo by Andy LaRocque. Fast, tight and melodic, it is widely seen as a landmark of melodic death metal.

What happened next?

The band split in 1996, played reunion shows in 2008 and came back for good in 2010. Four more albums followed: At War with Reality (2014), To Drink from the Night Itself (2018), The Nightmare of Being (2021) and The Ghost of a Future Dead (2026).

Remembering Tomas Lindberg

Tomas Lindberg died on 16 September 2025, aged 52, after complications from his cancer treatment. He had recorded his vocals for The Ghost of a Future Dead before his surgery, and the band released the album in April 2026, as he wished. It is his last work with At the Gates.
